We’ve talked about stories we’ve revised after many years. Have you ever given up totally on a story idea because you didn’t feel you could handle it, either technically or emotionally?

Project Abandonment
Yes, I’ve given up on a project because it was too emotional.
A friend’s daughter was killed by a serial killer back when I was in high school. I got to know her 20 years after the fact.
Everything in my life is a possible source for a story, and for years, I’ve kept a file on my computer with facts and thoughts about that case. And, technically, I could layer into a fictional story that nobody could easily trace to my friend and her family.
But I haven’t!
Why?
It’s not that it’s emotional for me, but that it might be emotionally damaging for the family and I just can’t do that to them. My friend passed a few years ago, but I can’t look in her granddaughter’s eye and say I used her mother’s death as a seedbed for a story.
There are tiny fragments of the story that have made it into my writing, but I came to a conclusion a few years ago that I would never write the full story…and that’s fine because our relationships should matter more than our fiction.
