This week’s topic is:
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
So far I’ve been able to mostly write what I know about, but sometimes (as in ‘For the Sake of a Child‘) I’ve had to email or phone somebody who could give me advice. Ferdi Nazim from the Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Children was most helpful when I asked him about RSPCC procedures for reporting child abuse.
When I wrote ‘A Rather Unusual Romance‘, I looked back on all the meticulous notes and diaries I had made at the time whilst undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer – some of the procedures I had quite forgotten.
At other times I just use Google to find out what information is available, or ask my husband if it’s something technical, like in ‘

But the people in the Lower 48 don’t know any better, which is probably why it drives me crazy.

I SEE YOUR POINT!!!—I LIVE IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA, THAT I HATE 1,000 PERCENT. WHAT PEOPLE IN THE LOWER 48 TAKE FOR GRANTED, THE PEOPLE IN ALASKA APPRECIATE. TAKE FOR EXAMPLE, ICE ROAD TRUCKERS AND THE DEADLIEST CATCH HAVE MORE APPRECIATION FOR LIFE AND WHAT LIFE CONTAINS, THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON IN THE LOWER 48. THE STATES THAT I HAVE PERSONALLY AN AFFINITY FOR ARE: FLORIDA, ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO, IDAHO, AND HAWAII. THE PEOPLE IN ALASKA SHOULD BE ADMIRED FOR THEIR ENDURANCE. WOMEN, MEN, AND FAMILIES DO HAVE TO WORK MORE CLOSELY TOGETHER, AND EVERYONE TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITIES MUST BE A PARTICIPANT. MYSELF, I AM A BEACH AND SAND LADY, BUT I SURE CAN APPRECIATE PEOPLE OF ALASKA. I HOPE TO BE A FLORIDIAN ONCE AGAIN, BUT MY SECOND CHOICE WOULD BE ARIZONA. NOT EVERYONE HAS THE TALENT FOR ALASKA, AND IT DOES REQUIRE SOME SPECIAL TOOLS OF CHARACTER AND ADJUSTMENT TO LIVE THERE.

The saying here is “Alaska renders you unfit to live anywhere else.” Which can’t really be true because we replace about one-third of our population every decade. But it does tend to change your mindset. I’m seeing signs, however, that we’ve been infiltrated by the California-Oregon-Washington crowd, so we may not remain a libertarian-minded society for much longer.

I KNOW MY LIMITATIONS AND CAPABILITIES AND COULD NOT LIVE IN ALASKA BEING A 66 YEAR OLD BEACH AND SAND LADY, BUT THEN AGAIN ALASKA DOES NOT NEED ME TO CREATE MORE PROBLEMS, AND IT IS A GOOD IDEA THAT NOT EVERYONE LIKES THE SAME PLACE, AS OF OVER CROWDING. AS FOR ALASKA READERS, I DO LOVE YOU, AND CERTAINLY WISH YOU WELL WITH THE INFLUX. LOOKS LIKE ALL OF YOU ARE ON YOUR WAYS TO BECOME EDUCATORS TO THESE FOLKS THAT NOW CALL ALASKA HOME. ONE THING FOR SURE, I CAN ALWAYS COME THERE AS A TOURIST, AND SPEND SOME MONEY. HA, HA, HA!!!
