The Bild newspaper was among those reporting on the incident at the Kinopolis movie complex in the southwestern town of Viernheim. It said special forces were on the scene.

Footage from outside of the theater showed heavily armed police strapping on bulletproof vests and running towards the building as sirens blared.

Local police told NBC News they were unable to comment as the situation was developing.

However, police spokeswoman Christiane Kobus described the incident as a “threat situation” to the Associated Press.

It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries or fatalities.

Viernheim, a town of about 32,000, is about 45 miles south of Frankfurt.
