West Coast ports mostly shut — $147,000 annual wage   Leave a comment

West Coast ports mostly shut for 4 of next 5 days as longshore dispute drags on | Business & Technology | The Seattle Times.

ourview021915Alaskan shelves are already starting to look bare. We’re okay. We have beans and rice and freezer full of frozen vegetables, so we won’t even be hitting the emergency stock for a week or more, but last time we were down to nothing by the time the strike cleared.

So here’s the thing. My dad was a union organizer. My husband and I are both union members, though not by choice. I have sympathy for the labor cause — in theory. But West Coast longshoremen make, on average, $147,000 a year, so what in the world are they complaining about? Well, typical wages (since overtime is not always available) is $83,000 a year. Uh … yeah, what are they complaining about?

I live in a state with a high cost of living and wages that often go along with it, but our household income is half that. So what the heck are they complaining about?
