QUOTE (Miles Coverdale) – Feb 19   Leave a comment

I so totally agree with this statement. Many people believe they can make the Bible say anything they want it to say, but Coverdale cut right to the heart of the matter. The words in the Bible have a context. Paul, for example, had a history. He arrived at the place where he wrote the letter by navigating the circumstances of his life and culture(s). The church he wrote to perhaps had asked him a question about circumstances that were occuring in the church at the moment. The churches of the New Testament formed in certain ways for certain reasons. All of this matters in understanding what Paul wrote and why what he wrote SEEMS different from what James wrote (for example). They weren’t contradicting one another. They were writing to different people about different issues, discussing the same topic from different angles. That’s not contradiction. It’s perspective.

“It shall greatly help ye to understand the Scriptures if thou mark not only what is spoken or written, but of whom and to whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, with what circumstances, considering what goeth before and what followeth after.”
~ Miles Coverdale

In honor of Miles Coverdale, Bible translator of the first complete printed translation of the Bible into English, who died on this day in 1568.
