Let Us End American Colonialism   Leave a comment

The next few posts are from Ernest Gruening’s 1955 speech at the Alaska Constitutional Convention. I’m posting it in parts because it is so long. Some might think that a 60-year-old speech is no longer relevant, but if you’ve read my complaints about the federal government then you know that Gruening’s complaints have not been addressed.

Statehood was supposed to fix those problems. Instead, it has at best legitimized them, and at worst deepened them. Or, perhaps most intolerable of all — both deepened the federal colonial abuse of its frozen banana republic and legitimized that abuse in the public’s view.
